Friday was the 70th anniversary of the Wannsee Conference, where Nazi officicals coordinated plans for the genocide of European Jews.
German President Christian Wulff spoke of German ‘shame’ during a ceremony at the villa on the Wannsee lake on the outskirts of Berlin where Nazi officials adopted the ‘Final Solution’ in 1942.
‘It is important and a national task to keep the memory alive,’ Wulff said ‘This place and the name ‘Wannsee’ has become a symbol for the bureaucratically organised decision between life worth living and life not worth living, for state-organised extermination, for the planned and official systematic killing of Europe’s Jews.’
The building is now a memorial and education center.
