El Salvador’s President Mauricio Funes has apologized for ‘the worst massacre of civilians in contemporary Latin American history,’ the 1981 El Mozote massacre in which soldiers killed 1000 people.
Speaking on the 20th anniversary of the 1992 peace accords that ended the nation’s 12-year civil war, Funes asked for forgiveness on behalf of the State and announced a series of reparations for victims and their families.
Funes named the military officers implicated in the massacre, and in an emotional address said ‘[we must] remove the veil that has blinded us for three decades.’
