A Rwandan man deported from Canada after a long legal battle has been charged with plotting genocide and other crimes against humanity stemming from an infamous anti-Tutsi hate speech he allegedly delivered in 1992.

Leon Mugesera came to Canada as a refugee in 1993 and has fought deportation for over 16 years, claiming he faced certain death if he was returned to Rwanda. He lost his final battle to avoid deportation on January 23.

Facing court in Kigali on Thursday, he said, ‘I need more time to find a lawyer. I’ve asked the prosecutor to wait. Within one or two months I will know who my lawyer will be.’

The case was adjourned until April 2.
