Canadians are observing ‘Holodomor Awareness Week’ in commemoration of the millions of Ukrainians who starved to death under Stalin’s rule in 1932 and ’33.
The Holodomor, or ‘killing by hunger’ has been recognized as a man-made famine, and Canadian Ukrainians will this week renew calls for present-day Russia to recognize the famine as genocide.
Black flags will fly in prominent locations across Canada and a number of events will commemorate the impact of the famine, culminating on Saturday with ‘International Holodomor Memorial Day’.
