Senior Research Fellow in International Law

Prague 1, Czech Republic

We are looking for a new colleague for the position: Senior Research Fellow in International Law.

The Institute of International Relations, Prague (IIR) has been the leading academic institution for the study of international relations in the Czech Republic since 1957. As an active member of international research networks, it conducts excellent academic research in the larger field of international relations, which includes European studies, security studies, area studies and other related disciplines. In its IR research, it sets national benchmarks for the quality of scientific research in International Relations. As an independent institution originally founded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the IIR also provides policy analysis and recommendations. It serves as a hub for academics, policy makers and the general public. It stimulates the expert, intellectual and public debates on the Czech foreign policy, European affairs and global issues. The IIR also publishes a number of academic journals and books, and it offers a joint PhD programme in International Relations and European Studies. As it is located in the historical centre of Prague, its venue and library provide a stimulating environment for scholars and students of international relations.

The IIR intends to establish the new Centre for International Law. The Centre will research topics at the intersection of international law and international relations. It will pay special attention to the areas of human rights, international criminal law, the law of armed conflicts, international institutional law and the theory of international law. Its ambition is to provide high-quality research while at the same time serving as an expert centre of legal analysis for the Czech foreign policy.

The IIR is seeking to appoint one full-time research fellow or two part-time research fellows in international law to work within the IIR Centre for International Law. The principal duty of the research fellow will be to conduct international quality research in international law and publish its results in international journals and via publishing houses. In addition to that, s/he should be able to carry out policy analysis and provide policy makers with her/his expertise in the form of policy papers, ad hoc studies and consultations. S/he will also be encouraged to appear in the media and engage in the public debate on international law, and the IIR will support her/him in such activities. With the support of the IIR’s project manager, s/he is also expected to apply for additional research funding and become a leader or co-leader of research projects that will include other IIR research fellows, associate researchers and PhD students. The research fellowship can be combined with lecturing at a partner university in Prague.
