Summer School on Transitional Justice and the Politics of Memory

Cres, Croatia, 22 June – 2 July 2015

Our 2015 transitional justice and memory summer school will mark 20 years since the end of the wars in Croatia and Bosnia and 70 years since the end of the Second World War. This year’s summer school, organized jointly by the University of Rijeka (Croatia), Pomona College (California), Montclair State University (New Jersey) and the University of Groningen (Netherlands), will be held in a region which felt both the effects of wars in the 1990s and the Second World War. It will offer students a unique opportunity to gain insights into transitional justice in the context of a region impacted by two of the 20th century’s most devastating conflicts.

In Cres, students will be provided with an opportunity to reflect upon the continued salience of memory politics and how the field of transitional justice has been evolved from the end the Second World War to the wars in the former Yugoslavia to the Arab Spring. This intensive 10-day Summer School will bring together academics and expert practitioners in order to explore the nexus between transitional justice and the politics of memory through expert lectures and workshops on international justice, the international politics of memory, truth commissions, lustration and transitional justice in the Arab Spring.
